The cogged belt is designed to replace the traditional V-belt, which tends to wear, fray and slip. When the V-belt is exposed to lubricant, it slips under high tension. Engineers looked into the problem and developed a belt that would hold and match the drive system but was not susceptible to any slippage or wear.

One cogged V belt advantage is that it has two designs of cogs or nubs - round or flat. The early, traditional and earlier cog belts had circular cogs. They were a good choice for driving cog-type systems but had difficulty in some applications where they would run out of drive systems or fail under pressure.
